Reverend Jill Gillanders led a lovely service for the children in St Wilfrid’s Church on Wednesday morning to introduce the season of Lent. The focus was on forgiveness, saying sorry and making amends when we know we have hurt someone else in some way. Reverend Jill and churchwarden Terry Cussons demonstrated the origins of Ash Wednesday by drawing a cross on each other’s foreheads using ash from last year’s burned palm crosses. Children were invited to do the same if they wished to.
After the service everyone moved to the village Green for pancake races. The school staff won the opening race against a team from the church, with lots of cheering and encouragement from the spectators. Each class then had a race in their sports teams, with Acacia gaining the most points. Despite the damp weather, it was lovely to see some parents and villagers turn out to support the children and enjoy hot drinks provided by the church.
